Rockfield
(A description written in 1891)
A Parish and Village bounded on the north-east by the river Monnow and on the old road from Monmouth to Abergavenny, called in olden times Corn-y-Cenhedloedd, and is 2.1/2 miles north-west of Monmouth railway station; in the Southern division of the county, Hundred of Skenfreth, Petty Sessional division, Union and County Court district of Monmouth, Monmouth & Skenfreth Highway district; eastern division of Abergavenny rural deanery, Monmouth archdeaconry and Llandaff diocese.
Two old crosses, one in the churchyard and one at the entrance of the village from Monmouth, have been restored.
The church of St. Cenhedloedd, rebuilt with the exception of the tower in 1862, consists of chancel, north aisle, south porch and a tower with a peculiar timber upper storey, and containing 3 bells: there are 198 sittings. The register dates from the year 1696. The living is a vicarage, £20 yearly tithe rent-charge, net income £50 including 26 acres of glebe, in the gift of John Allan Rolls Esq. and held since 1873 by the Rev. John Taylor Harding M.A. of Merton College, Oxford. Sexton: James Bowkett.

Post Office: William Brown, receiver. Letters from Monmouth arrive at 7 a.m; dispatched at 5.45 p.m. The nearest money order & telegraph office is at Monmouth.
Rockfield House, now (1891) vacant, is the property of John Allan Rolls Esq., Pentwyn is the seat of the Rev. John Taylor Harding M.A. vicar.
The Duke of Beaufort K.G. is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are the Rev. J.T. Harding M.A., Charles Henry Crompton-Roberts Esq. J.P., Capt. Kemeys-Tynte, and John Allan Rolls Esq. J.P., F.S.A. The soil is clayey; subsoil clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips. The area is 1,714 acres; rateable value, £1,880.
