(A description written in 1891)
A Parish on the main road from Chepstow to Raglan, 6.1/2 miles east-by-north from Usk railway station and 8 north-west from Chepstow; in the Southern division of the county, Hundred of Raglan, Petty Sessional division of Trellech, Union of Chepstow, County Court district of Usk, Raglan and Trellech Highway district; eastern division of Usk rural deanery, Monmouth archdeaconry and diocese of Llandaff.
The church of St. Michael, restored in 1860, is an ancient structure in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, north-west porch and a western bell-turret containing 2 bells: there are 100 sittings. The register dates from the year 1592. The living is a rectory, £80 yearly tithe rent-charge, gross income £122, with 16 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Archdeacon of Llandaff, and held since 1884 by the Rev. Thomas Phillips Rogers B.A. of Lampeter. Parish Clerk: John Vaughan.
The "There is Cross Hands Bible Christian chapel on the summit of the hill.

This parish is included in the United School Board district of Llanishen, Llanfihangel-Tor-y-Mynydd & Trellech Grange, formed in 1875, and the School is in Llanishen parish.
The Duke of Beaufort K.G. is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The soil is clayey; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are seeds and roots. The area is 1,031 acres; rateable value, £853.
The population in 1881 was 160.
