Henllys

(A description written in 1891)

Henllys or Hentlis, is a Parish to the west of the road from Newport to Pontypool, 4.1/2 north-west from Newport, 10 south from Pontypool, 26 south-west from Monmouth and 2 north from Tydee station on the Western Valleys section of the Great Western railway; in the Southern division of the county, Wentloog Hundred, Newport Petty Sessional division, Union and County Court district; Newport rural deanery, archdeaconry of Monmouth, and diocese of Llandaff.

The church of St. Peter is an ancient building of local stone, in the Norman style, consisting of chancel, nave and south porch and an embattled western tower containing 3 bells: there are 130 sittings. The register of Baptisms and Burials dates from 1765; Marriages, 1754. The living is a rectory, with Bettws vicarage annexed, tithe rent-charge £118, gross yearly value £80, with 50 acres of glebe in the gift of the Bishop of Llandaff, and held since 1877 by the Rev. David Roberts, who resides at 110 Stow Hill, Newport. Parish Clerk: Thomas Lloyd.

The Baptist denomination have a place of worship, erected in 1856, holding about 250 persons.

Schools:

This place is included in the United School Board District of Rogerstone, formed in 1874.

Board School, built in 1878, at a cost of nearly £2,100, for 180 children; average attendance, 120; E A Edwards, master; Miss Davis, mistress; Miss Tucker, infants' mistress.

Lady Llanover is lady of the manor and principal landowner, The soil is sandy, resting on red sandstone. The chief crops are roots and some pasture land. The are is 2,622 acres; rateable value, £2,466.

The population in 1881 was 334.
