Llanfihangel Gobion or Llanfihangel-near-Usk
(A description written in 1891)
A Parish and Village on the road from Monmouth to Abergavenny and from Abergavenny to Usk, and bounded on the south by the river Usk, 5 miles south-east from Abergavenny, 2 south-east from Penpergwm railway station on the Newport, Abergavenny & Hereford section of the Great Western railway, 6 north-west from Usk and 9 north-east from Pontypool; in the Northern division of the county, Hundred, Petty Sessional division, Union and County Court district of Abergavenny; south-western division of Abergavenny rural deanery, Monmouth archdeaconry and Llandaff diocese.
The church of St. Michael is a small building of stone in the Elizabethan style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and a western tower containing one bell: there are 120 sittings. The register dates from the year 1751. The living is a vicarage, gross yearly value £120, in the gift of the Rev. Sir John Henry Fludyer Bart., rector of Ayston, Rutland, and held since 1881 by the Rev. William George Davies B.D. of St. David's College, Lampeter, who is also rector of Llansantffraed, and resides at Llanthewy Rytherch. Parish Clerk: Edward Williams.
There is chapel for Calvinistic Methodists.
Charities producing about £20 yearly are distributed in money.

Mrs. Mary James, sub-postmistress. Letters arrive through Abergavenny at 7.55 a.m; dispatched at 4.5 p.m. Abergavenny is the nearest money order office. Postal orders are issued here, but not paid.
The Rev. Sir John Henry Fludyer Bart., J.P. who is lord of the manor, and William Herbert Esq. are the principal landowners. The soil is gravelly; sub-soil, sandy. The area is 377 acres; rateable value, £680.
The population in 1881 was 108.
