Monkswood or Monkswood Chapel

(A description written in 1891)

A Parish on the western bank of the Usk river and on the road from Usk to Pontypool, 2.3/4 miles north-west-by-west from Usk station on the Monmouth & Pontypool Road section of the Great Western railway; in the Southern division of the county, Hundred, Petty Sessional division and County Court district of Usk, Union of Pontypool; western division of Usk rural deanery, Monmouth archdeaconry and Llandaff diocese.

The church is a small building of stone, consisting of chancel and nave and a western belfry containing 2 bells: the church was entirely rebuilt in 1883, in the Early English style, from plans furnished by Mr.E. Lingen-Barker of Hereford, the chief contributors to the outlay being Miss E.A. Stokes, of Cheltenham, and the Duke of Beaufort K.G; there are 140 sittings. The register dates from the year 1783. The living is a vicarage, gross value £65 without, residence in the gift of the Duke of Beaufort, and held since 1857 by the Rev. Stephen Cattley Baker B.A. of St. John's College, Cambridge, who is also vicar of and resides at Usk. Parish Clerk: William Jeremiah.

Schools:

This place is included in the Glascoed United School Board District. A Sunday school is still held in the school room.

Duke of Beaufort K.G, P.C. is lord of the manor and sole owner of the parish. The soil is silurian; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are grain and roots; there is a great deal of wood. The area is 1,109 acres of land and 17 of water; rateable value, £908.

The population in 1881 was 176.
