Llanellen
(A description written in 1891)
A small Village and parish, bounded on the east and north by the river Usk, over which is a stone bridge of three arches, and is on the road from Abergavenny to Pontypool; it is 2 miles south of Abergavenny railway station; in the Northern division of the county, Abergavenny Hundred, Petty Sessional division, Union and County Court district of Abergavenny; south-western division of Abergavenny rural deanery, Monmouth archdeaconry and Llandaff diocese.
The Monmouthshire Canal runs through from north to south.
The church of St. Helen is a building of stone, in the Gothic style, repaired in 1840, and consists of chancel, nave, south porch, and a western bell-turret containing 2 bells: there are 120 sittings. The register dates from the year 1733. The living is a vicarage, tithe rent-charge (vicarial) £132, net yearly income £127, with residence and 15 acres of glebe, in the gift of Halswell Milborne Kemeys-Tynte Esq. and held since 1890 by the Rev. W David Jones. Parish Clerk: Matthias Walters.
Post Office - Howell Moses, receiver. Letters through Abergavenny, the nearest order & telegraph office, arrive here at 77.5 a.m; dispatched at 4.50 p.m. Postal orders are issued here, but not paid.
Schools:
National School (mixed), erected in 1861, for 80 children, average attendance, 45; Miss Lucy Jones, mistress.
A part of the Blorenge Mountain is within this parish. The Lady Llanover and Halswell Milborne Kemeys-Tynte J.P. who are lords of the manor, are the principal landowners. The soil is loamy; subsoil, stone. The crops are wheat, oats, barley, with some land in pasture. The area is 2,505 acres of land and 22 of water; rateable value, £2,097.
The population in 1881 was 366.
