Redwick

(A description written in 1891)

A Parochial Chapelry, on the Bristol Channel, 8 miles south-east from Newport and 3 south-by-west from Magor station, on the South Wales section of the Great Western railway; in the Southern division of the county, lower division of the Hundred of Caldicot, Petty Sessional division, Union and County Court district of Newport; middle division of the rural deanery of Netherwent, archdeaconry of Monmouth and diocese of Llandaff.

The church of St. Thomas is an ancient building of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing 5 bells: it was restored in 1876 at a cost of £1.000, and has 70 sittings, of which 50 are free. The register dates from the year 1787. The living is a perpetual curacy, consolidated with the vicarage of Magor, yearly vicarial tithe rent-charge (Redwick) £165, in the gift of the Duke of Beaufort, and held since 1882 by the Rev. Benjamin Birbeck, who resides at Magor, and Rev. Edward James, curate of Redwick & Magor. Parish Clerk: George Ballinger.

There is a Baptist chapel.

Post: Letters through Newport, arrive at 12 a.m. Wall letter box cleared at 3.20 p.m. The nearest money order office is at Magor. Caldicot is the nearest telegraph office.

The principal landowners are St. John Knox Rickards Phillips Esq. J.P. who is lord of the manor, and Lord Tredegar and Mrs. Perry-Herrick. The soil is a clayey loam; subsoil, clay and marl. The land is principally in pasture. The area is 2,234 acres of land and 5,560 of water; rateable value, £4,804.

The population in 1881 was 260.
