Llandegveth

(A description written in 1891)

A Parish and Village, on the small stream called the Soar, a feeder of the river Usk, 3.1/2 miles north from Caerleon station on the Hereford section of the Great Western railway, 8 miles north-east from Newport and 4 miles from Usk; in the Southern division of the county, Hundred of Usk, Petty Sessional division of Caerleon, Union of Pontypool, County Court district of Usk; western division of the rural deanery of Usk, archdeaconry of Monmouth and diocese of Llandaff.

The church of St. Tegfydd is an ancient building of stone, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, western porch and a belfry containing 2 bells: the church, supposed to have been built between 1150 and 1250, was rebuilt on its old lines by voluntary contributions in 1875-6; the ancient door and windows were replaced in the new walls, and the structure, excepting the chancel arch, was restored as nearly as could be ascertained to its original form: the east end, which is apparently of much later date, was not rebuilt: the chancel arch was erected as a memorial to John James, of this parish, and Sarah his wife, who died 1859: there are several monuments to the families of Meyrick of Lansoar, Ambrose of Wain-y-Pwll, Perrott of Court Perrott, and to former rectors: there are 80 sittings. The registers date from the year 1746. The living is a rectory, annexed to Llanthewy Vach, gross joint yearly value £215, in the gift of Rowland Addams Williams Esq. of Llangibby, and held since 1886 by the Rev. William Addams William EvansM.A. of St John's College, Oxford, who resides at Llanthewy Vach. Parish Clerk: Thomas Edwards.

Lansoar, the former seat of the Meyrick family, is now occupied by their descendants, the Misses James. There are also several ancient farm-houses, formerly the residences of old and substantial families.

Post: Letters through Caerleon arrive at 10 a.m. The nearest money order & telegraph office is at Caerleon.

Schools:

The children of this parish attend the school at Llangibby.

John Capel Hanbury Esq. J.P. and Rowland Addams Williams Esq. J.P. are lords of the manor. The principal landowners are W A Williams Esq. J.P., the Misses James, of Lansoar, and Iltyd Nicholl Esq. The soil is clay; subsoil, marly. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and grass land. The area is 789 acres; rateable value, £807.

The population in 1891 was 77.
