Pen y Clawdd

(A description written in 1891)

A Parish on the old road from Monmouth to Usk, 5.1/2 miles south-west from Monmouth and 1.1/2 miles south from Dingestow station of the Coleford, Monmouth, Usk & Pontypool line of the Great Western railway; in the Southern division of the county, Hundred and Petty Sessional division of Raglan, Union and County Court district of Monmouth, Raglan & Trellech Highway district; eastern division of Usk rural deanery, Monmouth archdeaconry and Llandaff diocese.

The church of St. Martin is a small but ancient building of stone, in the Early English style, consisting of Chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower, containing one bell: the east window is stained: there are 60 sittings. The register dates from the year 1727. The living is a vicarage, annexed to Llangoven, £170 yearly tithe rent-charge, gross income £201, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Llandaff, and held since 1888 by the Rev. William Rees, of Queen's College, Birmingham. Sexton: John Watkins.

Schools:

National School (mixed), built in 1888, for 45 children; average attendance, 15; Mrs. Selina Lewis, mistress.

The Duke of Beaufort K.G. who is lord of the manor, Samuel Courthorpe Bosanquet D.L., J.P., the trustees of the late John Winslow Esq., William Addams Williams Esq. J.P., and James Prichard Esq, are the principal landowner. The soil is clay; subsoil, strong clay. The chief crops are wheat, oats and beans. The area is 783 acres; rateable value, £565.

The population in 1881 was 68.
