(A description written in 1891)
A Parish on the west of the road from Newport to Pontypool, 1 mile from Malpas, 2.1/2 miles north-west-by-west from Newport railways stations on the Great Western railway and 11 south from Pontypool; in the Southern division of the county, Hundred of Wentloog; Newport Petty Sessional division, Union and County Court district; rural deanery of Newport, archdeaconry of Monmouth, and diocese of Llandaff.
The church of St David, repaired in 1858, is an ancient structure of local sandstone in a Early English style, consisting of chancel and nave and a small western turret containing one bell: there are 50 sittings. The register of Baptisms and Burials dates from the year 1696; marriages 1756. The living is a vicarage, annexed to the rectory of Henllys, tithe rent-charge (vicarial) £42, net yearly value, £170; the rectorial tithes, amounting to (?) yearly, being in the hands of the Ecclesiastical Commissioners: it is in the gift of the Bishop of Llandaff, and held since 1877 by the Rev. David Roberts. Parish Clerk, Charles Bayley.
Mrs. Prothero and Montague Gore Esq. are chief landowners. The soil is sandy; subsoil, red sandstone; the chief crops are roots. The area is 1,132 acres; rateable value, £1,616
