Llanwern

(A description written in 1891)

A Parish 1 mile south from the Chepstow and Newport road, with a station on the Great Western railway, South Wales section, 145 miles from London, 3.1/4 south-east from Caerleon and 4 east from Newport; in the Southern division of the county, lower division of Caldicot Hundred, Petty Sessional division, Union and County Court district of Newport, western division of the rural deanery of Netherwent, archdeaconry of Monmouth and diocese of Llandaff.

The Village of Llanwern includes the parish and a small hamlet in the parish of Christ Church, the inhabitants of which make Llanwern their parish church.

The church of St. Mary, restored in 1865, is a building of stone in the Norman style, consisting of nave, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 5 bells: the windows at the east end are stained: there are 70 sittings. The register dates from the year 1750. The living is a rectory, with the vicarage of Bishton annexed, £100 yearly tithe rent0charge, joint net income £200, with residence, in the gift of the Misses Rous, and held since 1873 by the Rev. Jeffrey Hooper, of St. David's College, Lampeter, who resides at Bishton. Parish Clerk: William Morgan.

Llanwern House, the property of Miss Rous, is at present occupied by David Alfred Thomas Esq. M.P. for Merthry Tydvil.

Schools:

The children attend school at Bishton.

Railway Station: Llanwern - Thomas Vowles, station master.

Miss Rous is lady of the manor and sole landowner. The soil is clay; subsoil, clay and marl. The land is wholly pasture. The area is 320 acres; rateable value, £2,884.

The population in 1881 was 14.
