Penhow

(A description written in 1891)

A Parish about 3 miles from from the Bristol Channel, on the road from Chepstow to Newport, 7.1/2 miles north-east from Newport and 3 north from Magor station on the Severn Tunnel junction and Newport section of the Great Western railway; in the Southern division, Union and County Court district of Newport; middle division of Netherwent rural deanery, Monmouth archdeaconry and Llandaff diocese.

The church of St. John the Baptist, situated close to Penhow Castle, is an ancient building of stone in the Early English style, and was restored and the chancel entirely rebuilt in the year 1851; it consists of chancel, nave, south aisle, south porch and a tower containing 5 bells: there is large and ancient font: there are 150 sittings. The register of Baptisms and Burials dates from the year 1725; Marriages, 1754. The living is a rectory, the tithe being commuted at £185, with about 30 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Mrs. Perry Herrick, of Beaumanor Park, Leicestershire, and held since 1886 by the Rev. John Ward, of the London College of Divinity. Parish Clerk: Ebenezer Jones.

Schools:

There is a National School for this and the adjoining parishes of Llanvaches & St. Brides Netherwent, situated in the last mentioned parish; also a Sunday school.

Post Office: Simeon Warder, sub-postmaster. Letters arrive from Newport via Caerleon at 9 a.m. & dispatched at 5 p.m. The nearest money order office is at Magor; telegraph office at Caerleon. Postal orders are issued here, but not paid.

The principal landowners are Mrs. Perry-Herrick, who is lady of the manor, the Duke of Beaufort K.G. and William Henry Phillips Jenkins Esq. J.P. of London. The soil is tolerably good, but in some places shallow; subsoil, stony and sandy. The chief crops are wheat, barley and roots. The area is 1,784 acres; rateable value, £1,505.

The population in 1881 was 245.
