A large Village which in 1845 was formed into an Ecclesiastical Parish from the civil parish of Trevethin, on the Avon Llwyd river; it has a station on the Eastern Valleys branch of the Great Western railway, one mile north-west from Pontypool and 162 from London; in the Northern division of the county, Petty Sessional division, Union and County Court district of Pontypool; Blaenau Gwent division of Abergavenny rural deanery, Monmouth archdeaconry and Llandaff diocese.
The church of St. Luke, erected on the site of an older building, removed in 1873, was consecrated in August, 1879, and is an edifice in the Early Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, organ chamber and an incomplete tower containing one bell: there are 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1845. The living is a vicarage, gross yearly value £225, with residence and 1 acre of glebe, in the gift of the Vicar of Trevethin, and held since 1875 by the Rev. Daniel Owen Davies, of St. David's College, Lampeter.
There are Calvinistic Methodist, Wesleyan, Baptist and Primitive Methodist chapels.
The Pontewynydd Sheet Iron and Steel Works have been considerably enlarged since coming into possession of John Tinn Esq. C.E. the present proprietor, and a large number of hands are employed in the manufacture of sheet iron & steel for galvanizing and export.
The dingles of Cwmnantddu and Cwmffrwdoer are full of coal and minerals, which are worked on a somewhat extensive scale. Here is an extensive steam brewery, and malting is carried on by Mr. Levi Slaney Jones. There is also a flannel manufactory, lime kiln and a steam bakery.

National School, now leased to Trevethin School Board, built in 1840 & enlarged in 1888, for 460 children; average attendance, 246 boys & girls & 145 infants; Henry John England, master; Mrs. Margaret Waters, mistress.

David Howell, station master.
The population in 1881 was 2,919.
