Llanarth
(A description written in 1891)
A Parish on the river Usk, 4 miles west-by-north from Penpergwm station on the Newport, Abergavenny & Hereford line of the Great Western railway, 3.1/4 miles north-west from Raglan station on the Coleford, Monmouth, Usk & Pontypool section of the same railway and 6 south-east from Abergavenny; in the Southern division of the county; Raglan Hundred and Petty Sessional division, Union and County Court district of Abergavenny, Raglan and Trellech highway district, south-western division of the rural deanery of Abergavenny, archdeaconry of Monmouth and diocese of Llandaff.
The church stands on the foundation of an ancient building, which together with the glebe, tithe and appurtenances was given by King Offa in the 7th Century to the Bishop of Llandaff and his successors in the see for ever, and is an ancient building os stone, in the Norman style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch an embattled western tower with pinnacles containing 6 bells: the church has been lately (1891) restored: there are 200 sittings: in the churchyard is an ancient stone with Saxon cross of the 7th Century; the inscription is now illegible. The register dates from the year 1593. The living is a vicarage, annual value £260 from tithe rent-charge, with several acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Llandaff, and held since 1883 by the Rev. Joseph Wheeler Osman. Parish Clerk: Thomas Watkins.
There is a Catholic Chapel dedicated to St. Mary.
Charities amounting to £70 are distributed twice yearly in the parish.
Llanarth Court, the seat of John Arthur Edward Herbert Esq. D.L., J.P. is a magnificent building of stone, in the Italian style, delightfully situated and surrounded with grounds 240 acres in extent; Clytha House is the seat of William Reginald Joseph Fitzherbert Herbert Esq. D.L., J.P; and Brynderwen, the seat of Rev. William Bruce M.A., J.P. of Oriel College, Oxford.
Post Office: Thomas Taylor, receiver. Letters received through Newport, arrive at 8.30 a.m; dispatched at 3.30 p.m. The nearest money order office is at Raglan & telegraph office at Llanvihangel Gobion. Postal orders are issued here, but not paid. Wall Letter box at Clytha, cleared at 2.50 p.m.

National School (mixed), built in 1857, for 60 children; average attendance, 36; Edward Henry Hudd, master;
Catholic School, Clytha, built in 1848, for 80 children; average attendance, 65; taught by the Sisters of St. Paul.
There is also a Sunday School.
The Duke of Beaufort, who is lord of the manor, William R J F Herbert Esq., and John A E Herbert Esq are the principal landowners. The soil is sandy; resting on sandstone and stiff clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and beans. The are is 1,907 acres; rateable value, £2,662.
The population in 1881 was 243.
