Llanfihangel Pont y Moile

(A description written in 1891)

A Parish on the road from Pontypool to Abergavenny, 1.1/2 miles south-east from Pontypool Town and 1 mile north-west from Pontypool Road railway station, which is in the parish; Little Mill station on the Coleford, Usk, Monmouth & Pontypool branch of the Great Western railway is also in this parish; it is in the Northern division of the county, Hundred of Usk, Petty Sessional division, Union and County Court district of Pontypool; western division of Usk rural deanery, Monmouth archdeaconry and Llandaff diocese.

The Brecon and Monmouthshire Canal runs through the parish.

The church of St. Michael is a building of stone in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and a western bell-turret containing 2 bells: there are 250 sittings. The register days from the year 1742. The living is a vicarage, gross yearly value £110, in the gift of John Capel Hanbury Esq. J.P. and held since 1851 by the Rev. Christopher Cook, of Lampeter College, who is also rector of Mamhilad, where he resides. Parish Clerk: John Evans.

Post & M.O.O., S.B. & Annuity & Insurance Office - Mrs Jane Morgan, receiver. Letters through Pontypool, arrive 7 a.m; dispatched 5.25 p.m. Pontypool is the nearest telegraph office. The post office is situated on the border of the parish close to New Inn, Panteg, and the inhabitants of that place (New Inn) receive their letters from it.

Schools:

A School Board of 5 members was formed in 1881 for the United District of Llanfihangel-Pont-y-Moile and Mamhilad;

Thomas Watkin, Pontypool, Clerk to the Board; John Davis, Tymaur, attendance officer.

Board School for both Parishes, built in 1856, for 90 children; average attendance, 41; Henry B Bancks, Master; Miss Sarah Bancks, mistress.

Railway Stations:

Pontypool Road: William C A Pullin, station master.

Little Mill: Richard Ball, station master.

The Duke of Beaufort K.G. is lord of the manor. The sole landowner is John Capel Hanbury Esq. J.P. The soil is clay; subsoil, marl. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 1,661 acres; rateable value, £4,838.

The population in 1881 was 373.
