A Parish including the town of BLAENAVON, on the high road from Abergavenny to Pontypool, 4 miles south from Abergavenny, 1 south-east from Penpergwm station on the London & North Western railway from Newport to Abergavenny; in the Northern division of the county, Hundred, Petty Sessional division, Union and County Court district of Abergavenny; south-western division of Abergavenny rural deanery, Monmouth archdeaconry and Llandaff diocese.

The parish is bounded on the north-east by the river Usk, and The Brecon and Monmouthshire Canal runs through it from south to north: the western part of the parish is very mountainous.

The church of St. Bartholomew is an ancient structure of stone in the Gothic style, consisting of chancel, nave, porch and a tower containing 5 bells: in the churchyard is a very handsome monument to the memory of the late Lord Llanover (ob.1867), and also an ancient stone cross: the church will seat 200 persons. The register of Baptisms and Burials dates from the year 1661; Marriages, 1754. The living is a vicarage, tithe rent-charge (vicarial) £250, net yearly value £300, with residence and 18 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Llandaff, and held since 1891 by the Rev. Evan Davies B.A. Parish Clerk: David Morris.

Here is a Congregational chapel and a Calvinistic Methodist chapel endowed by Lady Llanover.

There is also a mill.

Llanover, the seat of Lady Llanover, is a noble mansion of Bath stone in the Tudor style.

Post Office: David Jones, receiver. Letters arrive from Abergavenny at 7.45 a.m; dispatched at 4.10 p.m; no dispatch on Sunday. Abergavenny is the nearest money order & telegraph office.

Schools:

Parochial School (mixed), built, with residence for mistress, in 1872, for 60 children; average attendance, 46; built and supported by Lady Llanover; Mrs Rachael Evans, mistress.

Lady Llanover is lady of the manor and the principal landowner. The soil is gravel; subsoil, strata of stone and gravel. The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley. The area is 4,663 acres of land and 36 of water; rateable value £18,293.

The population in 1881 was 7,194.
