Cwmcarvan including Llanthomas

(A description written in 1891)

A Parish and Village on an affluent of the small river Trothy, on the left of the road from Monmouth to Abergavenny, 4.1/2 miles south-south-west from Monmouth, 2 south from Dingestow station on the Coleford, Monmouth, Usk & Pontypool section of the Great Western railway; in the Southern division of the county, Hundred of Raglan; Trellech Petty Sessional division, Raglan and Trellech Highway district, Union and County Court district of Monmouth, eastern division of Usk rural deanery, Monmouth archdeaconry and Llandaff diocese.

The church is an ancient building of stone, in the Early English and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 6 bells: there are 130 sittings. The register of Baptisms and Marriages dates from the year 1660; Births, 1728; Burials, 1662. The living is a chapelry, annexed to the rectory of Mitchel-Troy, tithe rent-charge £394, joint net yearly value £280, with 99 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Duke of Beaufort, and held since 1886 by the Rev. Henry Marriott Tomson Bidwell, who resides at Mitchel-Troy. Parish Clerk; Amos Williams

Schools:

Parochial School (mixed), erected in 1870, for 30 children; average attendance, 17; Miss Mary Catherine Eddy, mistress.

There are fine views over a great extent of country from Cwmcarvan Hill. Craig-y-Dorth, an eminence in this parish, is famous as having been the scene of a memorable battle fought there between Owen Glendower and King Henry IV in the year 1404, when the troops of the latter were defeated and driven to the Welsh Gate on the Monnow at Monmouth.

The Duke of Beaufort, who is lord of the manor, W C A Williams Esq, the trustees of the late James Richards Esq., and Samuel Courthope Bosanquet Esq. D.L., J.P. of Dingestow Court, are the principal landowners. The soil is clay, subsoil, marl. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips. The area is 2,930 acres; rateable value, £1,739;
